What is a Shinshin?
Shinshinim are talented young Israelis who have made the decision to defer their Israeli military service for one year to instead travel abroad and become ambassadors of their country. And, we are lucky enough to have one right here at Temple Israel this year to support our preschool and Religious School and share their life experience and culture!
We're excited to welcome our new Shinshinit, Roni Shhory.
Roni is here to share more about Israel.

A letter from our 2024-25 Shinshinit, Roni Shhory
Shalom everyone,
My name is Roni Shhory and I am the new shinshinit at Temple Israel!
I am really excited to start this year with you and can't wait to get to know you all, but first I want you to get to know me.
I am 18 years old and I am from a small town, Gedera, Israel. I live with my two parents: My mother Vered, my father Oren, my older sister Raz, and my younger sister Noam.
In my free time I enjoy going to my two youth movements. The first one is Maccabi Tzair, and the second one is volunteering on ambulances in the organization Magen David Adom.
I love to work out, spend time with my family and my boyfriend, and of course my friends, and I love (to try) to cook.
In 11th grade, I started thinking about doing “shnat sherut,” or year of service, and then I found out about the Shinshinim program. I felt that now, more than ever, we need to strengthen the connection between the Jewish community in Israel and Jewish communities abroad.
I arrived in St. Louis a little over a month ago with three Shinshinim: Roni, Ziv, and Gaya.
And since we arrived, the Jewish community here hugged and supported us. We really appreciate it. It's so meaningful for us because we are so far away from home and it can be tough sometimes.
I will spend this year working at Temple Israel, Kol Rinah, and for the Israeli Scouts.
If you have more questions please reach out to me, I would love to talk to you and get to know you all.
Thank you,
Roni
